ECUMENISM AND OUTREACH

"Whoever says, 'I am in the light,' while hating a brother or sister is in the darkness still. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling."                                                                        I John 2:9-10

CAMALDOLI

In 1975 the Prior General of The Order of St. Benedict (Camaldoli) visited our monastery at West Park. The Camaldolese, as they are called, were founded by St. Romuald in the 11th century, but both communities were amazed at how much they had in common. Eventually this insight was expressed formally through a "covenant relationship" which continues to this day.

At Berkeley this meant that for many years the two communities lived together. Today, physical and other needs have changed, so we live in different buildings, but the relationship begun in 1975 continues to grow and bear fruit. In Berkeley the Camaldolese now live at

Incarnation Monastery, a few blocks away, and the two communities meet regularly for fellowship and common worship.

The Chapel at Incarnation Priory is dedicated to "St. Gregory (of Rome) and St. Augustine (of Canterbury)", a reminder of the fact that the Camaldolese monastery at Rome, San Gregorio, is the very same one from which St. Augustine set out for England fourteen centuries ago.

THE CHURCH DIVINITY SCHOOL OF THE PACIFIC (CDSP)

When Incarnation Priory was founded in 1979 the monks actually lived at CDSP , the Episcopal Seminary in Berkeley. CDSP is a member of The Graduate Theological Union, an ecumenical consortium of seminaries in the Berkeley area. Since then we have

moved to a new location a few blocks away, but we continue to have a "covenant relationship" with the Seminary.

One expression of that relationship is worship in common. During the academic year, the monastic community normally worships with the Seminary community at their Thursday evening Eucharist. On occasion we have taught courses or provided spiritual direction, and we are sometimes able to help provide hospitality
for guests.
